SMSC/British Values

SMSC

At the Colman Federation, we recognise the part that pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) plays in their ability to learn and achieve. We aim to achieve this by creating a happy vibrant environment where diversity and individuality are celebrated. We nurture and inspire our children to develop confidence and resilience in an environment where efforts are valued and all children flourish.

We provide our pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, ownership of their behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of different social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. This is embedded throughout all aspects of school life, linked to our rights and responsibilities and the key areas are mapped through our curriculum themes and enrichment opportunities.

Over the year, each key area is carefully mapping out and linked to a weekly whole-school theme, to be explored and celebrated. The week starts with an introductory assembly, which promotes the key theme. This theme is then explored in greater depth throughout the week in whole school assemblies, collective worship, singing, year group and class-based assemblies.  Our pupils are encouraged to celebrate the internationally and nationally recognised theme days, religious celebrations and key events and to celebrate and support local events and organisations.

BRITISH VALUES

The Government sets out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values were reiterated in the 2014 National Curriculum.

The five British Values are:

  • Democracy.
  • The rule of law.
  • Individual liberty.
  • Mutual respect.
  • Toleranceof those of different faiths and beliefs.

The five fundamental British Values are valued and promoted and linked to our curriculum. Our aim is to ensure pupils understand the importance of respect and understand the role they have living in modern Britain.
